NOTES CLIENT INSTALLATION AND UPGRADE

Using Notes Smart Upgrade
IBM® Lotus® Notes® Smart Upgrade notifies users to update their Notes client to a later release. You have the option of using Lotus Notes Smart Upgrade with a policy document and policy settings documents to help manage updates. If you choose not to use policies, use the settings in the Smart Upgrade kit document to manage updates.

Note Policies are not required to use Smart Upgrade.

You cannot upgrade a pre-Notes 8 client on the Linux or Apple Mac OS X platform to this release.

Prerequisites

To use Smart Upgrade as a means of upgrading Notes clients, you must meet the following prerequisites:

To use Lotus Notes Smart Upgrade, follow this procedure:

1. Create an application using the Smart Upgrade kits to host Notes client update kits.

2. Update the Configuration Settings document in the Domino Directory with a link to the Smart Upgrade application. Domino uses its replica ID in the link and does the following in this order
1.) Looks for a local replica of that application, and if found, uses it.
2.) Looks for a replica of that application on any cluster mates if the server is in a cluster, and if found, uses it.
3) Uses the application on the server specified in the Server Configuration document.

3. See "Smart Upgrade kits from Lotus downloads" at the Lotus developerWorks site to download an update kit, also known as an incremental installer.

4. Create a an upgrade kit document in the Smart Upgrade application and attach the desired Notes install kit to the kit document, or designate a shared network drive in the kit document.

5. If you are using policies, create or modify a desktop policy settings document to specify the updated release to deploy and the date on which the grace period for updating a Notes client ends.

6. If you are using policies, create or modify a policy document to assign users or groups to the desktop policy settings document.

7. If you are using policies, use the policy document to assign users and groups to the policy. See the topic "Planning and assigning policies."

Note The Smart Upgrade kits are available in English and other languages (for language packs).
