NOTES CLIENT INSTALLATION AND UPGRADE

Removing features from the Notes install kit using a supplied tool
You can optionally remove certain features from the IBM® Lotus® Notes® install kit prior to installing or upgrading Notes.

Only features containing the <installfeature> property required="false" in the Notes install kit's install manifest (install.xml) are available for removal or other install options. These include the Composite Applications Editor, Lotus Symphony, Connections (Activities), embedded Sametime®, and (for single user install) Domino Designer and Domino Administrator clients. All other supplied features must remain as supplied in the install kit.

Note Domino Designer and Domino Administrator, and as of Notes 8.5.1 Lotus Symphony require the additional step of using the tuner to create a transform that disables their install completely. This transform file must be included in the Notes install kit during install.

The trimUpdateSite tool is available as trimUpdateSite.exe. If using Linux, see "Customizing Notes install for Linux RPM or DEB".

The trimUpdateSite tool is part of the Apps directory toolkit available with the Notes install kit.

Note As an alternative, you can manually remove the feature, plug-in, and SITE.XML content from the updateSite.zip and the correlating <installfeature> from the install manifest, using Notes install kit conventions.

Note You need the externally-available zip232xN.zip and unz552xN.exe from ftp://tug.ctan.org/tex-archive/tools/zip/info-zip/WIN32/ to run the tool.

1. Make a backup copy of your Notes install kit.

2. Create a working directory by copying the updateSite.zip and deploy\install.xml to a new directory. Ensure that you have write access to the working directory.

3. Ensure that you have adequate space for unzipping and re-zipping updateSite.zip on your %TEMP% drive.

4. Change to the working directory in which the updatesite.zip and the deploy\install.xml install manifest reside.

5. Move a copy of the supplied trimUpdateSite.exe (apps\utility\trimUpdateSite.exe) and its readme.txt file to your working directory.

6. Open the readme file associated with the trimUpdateSite.exe and obtain the zip232xN.zip and unz552xN.exe from ftp://tug.ctan.org/tex-archive/tools/zip/info-zip/WIN32. Place them in the working directory.

7. Navigate to your working directory and run the trimUpdateSite.exe program.

8. Click the "..." browse button next to the "Select Location of updateSite.zip:" option.

9. Select the directory as instructed.

10. Select the feature(s) to remove and click Process Selection(s).

11. When prompted, click OK to remove the selected feature(s) from the updateSite.zip (update site folder) and the deploy\install.xml file (Notes install manifest).

12. When informed that processing is complete, click Exit.

13. Copy the modified updateSite.zip and deploy\install.xml from your working directory to overwrite the supplied updateSite.zip and deploy\install.xml in your Notes install kit.

14. As of Notes 8.5.1, validate the customized install kit. For information, see "Validating your customized Notes install kit".

15. As of Notes 8.5.1, if you are customizing the kit to remove Lotus Symphony, create a transform that turns off the Editors feature and include that in the Notes install kit. For information see "Customizing Notes install using the tuner" and "Calling a transform file during Notes silent install."

16. Perform a test installation to be sure that the kit functions correctly.

The trimUpdateSite tool creates a copy of the files it modifies, for example "copy of updateSite.zip" and "copy of install.xml." You can undo the trimUpdateSite tool work by deleting its output updateSize.zip and install.xml and renaming the "copy of" originals back to updateSite.zip and install.xml.
